With the popularity of online chat rooms comes the ability to meet potential friends and maybe even potential life partners. The great thing about chat rooms is that you don't have to doll yourself up to enjoy some great conversation.
Chat rooms offer anonymity so if you end up chatting with someone you don't particularly like you can just remove yourself from the conversation. That being said chat rooms are not a place that promotes being obnoxious but it does provide a safe environment for expanding your conversational skills.
We have listed some excellent tips below for online chat. Most importantly be sure to stay safe by following a few guidelines to protect yourself.
Protecting your Identity:
We suggest you not use your personal email or work email to engage in chat room conversation. Use some of the emails that are available online such as yahoo.com or hotmail.com. When filling out your profile we suggest you use only generic information.
No Private Information:
Don't give out your personal information in a casual conversation such as where you work, where you live, your home town or your real name. All of this information can be used to steal your identity and if you have been watching the news lately there's a lot of that going on. Never reveal too much about yourself even to those you have chatted with for quite some time.
Use Your Head:
Common sense is something we are born with, follow your gut it probably is right. If someone sounds a bit creepy chances are they actually are.
Be Yourself:
If you are really looking to meet prospective mates or friends then the best way is to be yourself. Be open and honest without giving out any real private information. Don't try to pretend you are someone your are not as this most always ends in hurt feelings.
Don't Send Fake Photos
If in time your chat partner suggests that you swap pictures and you feel comfortable doing this, don't send fake pictures of yourself or old high school photos of the glory days. It is easy to build a mental image of someone through chat so we suggest you don't set yourself up for disappointment.
Begin by Dating Online
If you find you are attracted to someone online and he/she returns your enthusiasium we suggest you start your relationship by dating online, finding activities you can do together on the internet or interactively. Make sure to share with your prospective partner what your expectations are as far as moving forward with the relationship outside the safety of chat.
Meeting Someone Online
If or when your online relationship gets to the point where you will be meeting this person in real life there are a few things you should remember. Set up your initial meeting in a public place where you feel comfortable and protected. Be prepared to perhaps not like this person and have a plan of escape! Ask a personal friend to call you during the date to see how it's going. This is an out if you need one or a reassurance to your loved ones that things are fine. Don't put yourself in a position to be alone with this person until you have had several meetings in public places. Remember always follow your gut feelings. If a person doesn't appear to be above board with you chances are they are hiding something and we suggest you move on.
